Dallas Duo Shines in Family Gallery at The Lumen Room

This mama walked in to the room with a smile on her face, sat down a few bags, and said “BRB, dealing with a projectile vomiting kiddo”.
I was certain we would need to reschedule. . .
They both walked into the studio about 15 minutes later with smiles on their faces and matching maroon dresses and black boots on. I was not sure if kiddo’s stomach was going to make it through an entire shoot, but she rocked it. She was ready to pose with mama, had all of the smiles, and definitely some of the best dances moves I’ve seen in a long time. She is not shy AT ALL, she is confident, bold, and made my whole day.
Parenthood (from the eyes of a non-parent) seems like a series of unpredictable, often expensive, events…all of the time!!! The ability to adapt and roll with the punches seems like a necessary skill. This mama laughed through what could have easily ruined her day, and it made me look up to her even more than I already did.
These two are adorable and I want to share their entire gallery, but I narrowed it down to a few faves. Without further ado-
The Least Shy Kiddos in Dallas and their Gorgeous Parents take on The Lumen Room!
Ballerina twirls, froggie jumps, and sugar- that’s what little girls are made of. Well, at least these two kiddos.
I met their mama several years ago, and she has been such a blessing in my life. Kendra, your family brought me so much joy during our session. When I think of a lasting love, I think of the way you and Gene look at one another. When I think about “parent goals”, I think about the way your girls look at you and Gene. When I think about having children, I remember your youngest doing the froggie jumps during the Christmas pajama portion of the session, and I then take my birth control. Thank you so much for allowing me to take these and getting all cozy and vulnerable for my camera; I know being photographed isn’t an easy task. Though this was a family centered session, I was able to shoot quickly so we achieved a lot of variety. I always try to throw in some extra shots, maybe a few steamy couple photos, a new LinkedIn headshot, or even a fancy solo portrait for mama. Without further ado, The Washington Family. Dallas Girl Gang Meetup! (August Edition)
Review of recent Girl Gang Meetup in Dallas featuring female DFW photographers and models.
I was finally able to attend my first Girl Gang Meetup in August; the event was hosted by Kristianna Davied at Studio 34 Seven in Dallas. There were no boys allowed, and it was pretty dang magical.
There was an abundance of talent in attendance and I was so stoked to meet a lot of the DFW area creatives that I have admired via social media and art shows for a while. I am not really a shy person, but when I’m in a room full of strangers, it takes me a while to open up. However, within 15 minutes of arriving, I was meeting people left and right and was able to take way more portraits than I anticipated. Meetups are an amazing way for local creatives to be able to meet, collaborate, exchange ideas, plan future sessions, etc… I highly suggest attending a meetup if you are a new model or photographer, but they are beneficial for anybody that goes! You should take water, props, outfits, and any necessary gear. I can’t speak highly enough about the Girl Gang Meetup because I felt supported through the entire shoot and was met with a smile each time I introduced myself to somebody new.

This glittery, pastel boudoir session was a dream for me!
This babe showed up with the most amazing makeup (did it herself) and outfits planned; I was not ready!!!! She had purple fuzzy lingerie, purple fuzzy blinged-out heels, colorful hair, gorgeous tattoos, and some glittery galactic highlighter that I had a hard time not impulsively buying online after our session. So, when I am in unfamiliar territory, I tend to be rather shy. I recently attended a meetup that featured local Dallas models and photographers.
For the first forty five minutes or so, I was reserved and afraid to approach models. I primarily shoot boudoir so approaching strangers and asking to take their portraits was intimidating. Once my nerves settled, I was able to meet people and collaborate. I was blown away at the talent and am grateful for all of the connections made! I'm not really sure why my little sister and I didn't start working together WAY sooner, but it is happening now and I couldn't be happier about it. She is a bright and bold star in my life and her artistic talents have always impressed me. She can draw and paint, but she spends most of her time creating art on faces and hair. She did both of our makeup and I took all of the photos, I'm hoping to improve with self portraits soon so I can take portraits of us together for twice the makeup magic goodness.
My personal favorite part of this collaboration was the pastel pink construction hat we acquired at Lula B's in Oak Cliff earlier that day. We bought it as a bit of a joke/gift for our feminist Aunt Kat, but after taking selfies in it and sending them to her, we learned that she HATES PINK HARD HATS. Sooooo, it became a perfect prop for our color palette and we just went with it...LOVE YOU AUNT KAT!
Experimenting with various textures and lighting was challenging and fun for me, and the self portraits were the hardest due to my small studio space. I do not say this to complain, but to say you do not always need a fancy studio or fancy equipment to make magic happen. If you have a vision, go for it! The silver backdrop in many of the photos was the silver side of my reflector. Poster board and extra sheets are affordable backdrop options, and you can literally use the most random objects like tissue paper or party streamers to create funky effects in your images. Step out of the box, be weird, and embrace your badassery!!!
